South Chicago Chicago Real Estate Conditions
Formerly known as Ainsworth, South Chicago is a far
south Chicago community located with 79th to the north,
95th south, Lake Michigan east, and Stoney Island west.
First settled by Irish and Swedish traders, South
Chicago became home to Chicago’s lumber and steel industries, which gave it the
nickname “The Rust Belt.” In more recent years, the Hispanic, Polish, and
Afro-American communities have more heavily populated the area. Mom and pop
stores and grocers flourish along the shopping district along the newly
revitalized Commercial Avenue. South Chicago is home to Bessemer Park, which was
designed by Henry Bessemer, designer of Manhattan’s Central Park.
Many of the homes in this neighborhood date back to the
turn of the century, but have been rehabbed in recent years. South Chicago is a
developer favorite, with many new and affordable construction projects arising
daily.
