River North, also known as Chicago’s “Gallery District,” is located at Chicago Avenue to the north, the Chicago River to the south, State Street to the east, and the Chicago River again to the west. The community is immediately north of the Loop.

Formerly filled with warehouses and factories, River North has become a destination for artists and gallery owners, much like New York’s Soho. River North is also home to the Merchandise Mart, Chicago’s home for upscale home decoration and design. Trendy restaurants and dance clubs line the streets as well as cozy cafes and boutiques. Urban dwellers are attracted to this neighborhood due to its proximity to the Loop and the Magnificent Mile’s shopping district.

River North is a neighborhood that is transforming constantly architecturally. Factories have been converted into lofts and high rises, though town homes continue to make a more prevalent presence within the community.
